How Typical Alimony Payment is Calculated

40% of the higher earner’s net monthly income minus 50% of the lower earner’s net monthly income = Monthly Temporary spousal support.”

EXAMPLE: AMOUNT OF SUPPORT USING THE COMMON FORMULA

Higher Earning Spouse’s net income is $8,000 per month
Lower Earning Spouse’s net income is $3,000 per month
40% of $8,000 = $3,200
50% of $3,000 = $1,500
$3,200 – $1,500 = $1,700
Therefore, the higher-earning Spouse will pay the lower-earning spouse Spouse $1,700 support per month.
